Thank You For Your Generosity!

Yesterday was a busy day at the Elk Grove Food Bank - and that's exactly how we like it. Due to the generosity of our community, volunteers were busy processing the food donated. Processing is a word that doesn't really cover what they do on a daily basis.

Sorting Table at the Elk Grove Food Bank graphic

When canned and boxed goods are brought to the Elk Grove Food Bank, volunteers first sort through them to check the expiration date. Then, they put them on the appropriate shelf; that makes it SO much easier to fill boxes and bags to be given to our clients.

When vegetables and fruits are donated, a volunteer sorts them into family serving sizes. This time of year items are also being sorted into temporary boxes of Christmas dinner items (canned yams, cranberries, gravy, canned milk, pie filing, etc.

A sample of yesterday's bags included bananas, grapes, bag of oranges, peppers, apple, pear, green onions, pre-made salads, tomatoes, Brussel sprouts and a bag of tomatoes. As the bags are filled, they are placed on a shelf ready to be given to our next client at the window.

In the afternoon, Elk Grove Food Bank picked up a large donation.  It was wonderful! But we also know that with are numbers increasing (over 4,500 clients served monthly), we need to keep filling our shelves.

SO, thank you for your generosity!

P.S. We can always use plastic and brown paper bags.

EGFBS Benefits from Raley's Food for Families Summer Donation Drive

Elk Grove, CA – With 1 in 6 Americans facing hunger, food insecurity is one of the most challenging issues facing our nation today. Not to mention that families in need are also substantially less likely to get enough of the healthy fruits and vegetables required for a balanced diet- but you can help! This month, Raley’s is launching a Summer Donation Drive. Raley’s will provide a matching donation of fresh produce for every dollar donated, up to $25,000, now through July 31st.

“We know that families facing hunger are also far less likely to eat a nutritionally complete diet. It’s been a dream of Food For Families to offer our food bank partners both fresh produce and dry goods,” said Jennie Teel-Wolter, Raley’s Community Relations Manager. “With the addition of fresh produce to the line-up of offerings, we are confident we are taking positive steps to better fight hunger and its associated health impacts.”

Food For Families began as a holiday food drive, founded by Raley’s Co Chairman and Owner Joyce Raley Teel and CEO Emeritus Charles Collings in 1986. Through the Food for Families partnership with local food banks, the program raises monetary and food donations to serve those in need with Raley’s absorbing all administrative costs of the program. That means 100 percent of every donation goes directly to feeding the hungry. With the help and support of employees, customers and business partners, Food For Families has raised more than $31 million and donated more than 21 million pounds of dry groceries to food banks.

While obtaining food is a challenge for tens of millions of Americans, accessing nutritious food has proven to be even more difficult. Low-income levels have historically been linked to higher rates of obesity.  A recent study revealed obesity rates increased by 10 percent for all U.S. children 10 to 17 years old between 2003 and 2007, but by 23 percent during the same time period for low-income children. With the recently launched pilot program, Food For Families hopes to address hunger and obesity simultaneously by making fresh produce available for those who may not always have access to it.

“During the school year, many families rely upon free or reduced cost school lunch programs to provide their children with well-rounded meals,” said Teel-Wolter. “Over the summer break, these children can become vulnerable to food insecurity. Our Food For Families Fresh donation drive will help bolster the supply of healthy food at our local food banks to meet the increased need.”

Established in 1974, the Elk Grove Food Bank Services is a critical component to the welfare of the Elk Grove community, providing food, clothing and resources to our neighbors in need.  The Food Bank receives funding from individual donors, foundations, businesses, churches and local/federal governments. The summer break has severely affected the number of clients aided by EG Food Bank:  in the month of May 2014, 3,512 individuals used the services of the Food Bank – 444 more individuals than the previous months; a 14.5 percent increase.

Making a donation is easy, and can be done from the comfort of your own home, from your cell phone or during your next trip to your local Raley’s Family of Fine Foods Stores (Raley’s, Bel-Air or NobHill). See below for details:

22nd Annual Letter Carrier's Food Drive

Elk Grove, CA – On Saturday May 10, 2014, the Elk Grove Food Bank Services (EGFBS) will have a special delivery of support from local letter carriers. This is the one day of the year that everyone has the opportunity – with the help of letter carriers - to easily donate food to help families in need here in their community. The United States Postal Service Food Drive is the country’s largest one day-collection.

“The Food Drive gives everyone the chance to be part of something bigger than anything we could do alone, said Elk Grove Postmaster Susan Skidmore. “It’s our Postal Service customers who really make a difference.  Customers can leave canned food at their mail box and the letter carrier will pick it up. Every can and package of food collected makes a difference in someone’s life. So together, I know we’ll make a difference with this year’s food drive and do our best to make sure no one goes hungry.”

“The letters carriers do an amazing job to make this food drive successful,” says Marie Jachino, EGFBS Executive Director.  “This time of the year is when we generally see less food donations coming in, so this drive comes at a crucial time.”

Remember the Postal Carrier food drive is Saturday, May 10, the day before another important day, Mothers Day!

Pleasant Grove High School Engineering Perfection

Pleasant Grove High School Engineering students, Stephen Lee, Leon Hung and Zac Matsumoto came down to the food bank to find out if we needed anything they could build for us.
As it turns out our table that held bread for our clients was falling apart and on its last legs. After taking specific measurements the students went back to school and got to work building the PERFECT bread shelf for us!!!

Our volunteers are so pleased with the new shelf.  The boxes we use fit perfectly and now we can more efficiently store food for distribution to our clients.

Thank you Pleasant Grove High School for the wonderful new shelving system.  Our volunteers' work is so much easier now with the system you built to our specs.

Sliced Bread

Just put together bit of information I heard at Staff and overheard conversations around the office.

We have a need for sliced bread, sandwich bread.

We distribute the makings for peanut butter sandwiches (among other food) to our clients.  Because of local bakeries restructuring, the donations of bread has been slowed to a trickle.

If you are able, please bring by some loaves of sandwich bread for distribution to our clients.

We are open for donations Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Our address is 9820 Dino Drive, Suite 140, Elk Grove, CA  95624.

Thank you for helping us out.

Mobile Pantry February Distribution

More news from our latest staff meeting.

Rosa, our Mobile Pantry volunteer, reported that we served 146 people in the Franklin area with food and clothing.  These clients are seasonal farm workers and do not have transportation to access our services at our facility on Dino Drive.

Here is a link to a posting about our distribution in Franklin.

Rosa told us of the need for warm winter coats for these clients.  We distribute food and clothing to our Franklin clients on the second Friday of the month.  If you have an extra coat hanging around, please consider donating to Elk Grove Food Bank Services.

Donations are cheerfully accepted on Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 9820 Dino Drive, Suite 140, Elk Grove, CA  95624.

Thank you for supporting your local food bank.

January Wish List for Clothes Closet

Our Clothes Closet Manager, Susan, reported at our latest staff meeting that we distributed over 4,000 pieces of clothing during December, filled 70 "school orders**" and distributed over 400 coats to our clients.

Susan was concerned that the number of winter sweaters for men is running very low.  If you are thinking about downsizing your sweater wardrobe, please consider donating to our Clothes Closet.

We are open to receive donations Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 9820 Dino Drive, Suite 140, Elk Grove, CA  95624.

** School Orders are requests from Elk Grove Unified School District for clothing for children (and their families).  School staff who recognize the need make the request on behalf of the student, the request is sent to our Clothes Closet, and the "order" is delivered through the school district's mail system.

Christopher's Donation

Our youngest and most self-less donor came in a couple of days ago with a bunch of kid-sized coats.  Christopher used the money in his piggybank ($75)  to purchase warm clothing for local children in need.

The actions of this remarkable young one put a smile on all of our faces.  Thank you, Christopher, for helping your community.

2012 Turkey Drive

It’s hard to imagine Thanksgiving without a roasted turkey.  Yet with the rising food costs, a Thanksgiving celebration may be out of reach for more than 800 families in Elk Grove.  With support from the community, the Elk Grove Food Bank Services (EGFBS) has the programs in place to provide turkeys to those in need.

Individuals, businesses and organizations can help bring families together around the holiday table. These generous contributions can make a real difference in the lives of families struggling in this difficult economic climate.

Elk Grove residents can help their local Food Bank this Thanksgiving these following ways:

November 5-19:  Turkey Drive
9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
EGFBS facility – 9820 Dino Drive, Suite 140

Please consider dropping off a frozen turkey, chicken or any non-perishable side dish such as potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, stuffing, etc.

November 20:  Turkey Distribution
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
EGFBS facility – 9820 Dino Drive, Suite 140

In times of uncertainty, helping families come together for Thanksgiving has never been so important.

Merryhill School Makes Donation

Merryhill School students are learning about Giving Without Walls and how they can give back to the community.  The students wanted to give food to those in need.  The classrooms collected food items for two weeks to donate to the local Elk Grove Food Bank.  It was a great experience, especially seeing the truck and helping give the canned food to the driver.

We at Elk Grove Food Bank appreciate these lessons taught to our youngest citizens.  Our clients will benefit greatly from the kindness of these children.

The Running Zone Makes Donation

I arrived at work to find three huge bags of donated items from our friends at The Running Zone.  I opened the bags and found them full of athletic shoes, lightly used ones.  Deb got in touch with Mimi at The Running Zone and found out about their program to collect lightly used shoes from their customers for donation to EGFBS.

These are just a portion of the shoes donated.

In addition to the lightly used shoes, our friends at The Running Zone included some new sports clothing.

Thank you to our kind partners at The Running Zone, an active sponsor to our Run 4 Independence on Saturday, June 30, 2012.  We appreciate your faithful support to Elk Grove Food Bank Services over the years.

Wells Fargo Volunteers at EGFBS

While we were at the Seasons apartments delivering food to our isolated senior clients, Wells Fargo Bank volunteered at our Dino Drive facility. They brought with them donations, nearly 77 lbs of food.

In their one hour of volunteering they filled 55 boxes for our Senior Brown Bag program and sorted through 48 boxes of canned goods!

It would take four volunteers two full days to do the boxes for the brown bag program and another day to sort through the canned goods.

And Wells Fargo Bank did it in ONE HOUR!!!
Thank you, Wells Fargo, for your continued support of Elk Grove Food Bank Services!

Donation from the Greater Sacramento New Car Dealers Association

You can image the excitement when you arrive at work and this is the first thing you see!  After the jumping up and down was over, we found out that the amount was $17,000!  Then we had to sit down.  Take a breath.  Wow!

The Greater Sacramento New Car Dealers Association donated towards the purchase of a new truck for Elk Grove Food Bank Services.  In past postings you can see our one and only panel truck.  With another truck we will be able to make more deliveries to clients without transportation, pick up donations, transport gleaned produce from Davis Ranch, etc.

Thank you, thank you, Greater Sacramento New Car Dealers Association!  We will be better able to serve our clients with your very generous donation!
