EGFBS Benefits from Raley's Food for Families Summer Donation Drive

Elk Grove, CA – With 1 in 6 Americans facing hunger, food insecurity is one of the most challenging issues facing our nation today. Not to mention that families in need are also substantially less likely to get enough of the healthy fruits and vegetables required for a balanced diet- but you can help! This month, Raley’s is launching a Summer Donation Drive. Raley’s will provide a matching donation of fresh produce for every dollar donated, up to $25,000, now through July 31st.

“We know that families facing hunger are also far less likely to eat a nutritionally complete diet. It’s been a dream of Food For Families to offer our food bank partners both fresh produce and dry goods,” said Jennie Teel-Wolter, Raley’s Community Relations Manager. “With the addition of fresh produce to the line-up of offerings, we are confident we are taking positive steps to better fight hunger and its associated health impacts.”

Food For Families began as a holiday food drive, founded by Raley’s Co Chairman and Owner Joyce Raley Teel and CEO Emeritus Charles Collings in 1986. Through the Food for Families partnership with local food banks, the program raises monetary and food donations to serve those in need with Raley’s absorbing all administrative costs of the program. That means 100 percent of every donation goes directly to feeding the hungry. With the help and support of employees, customers and business partners, Food For Families has raised more than $31 million and donated more than 21 million pounds of dry groceries to food banks.

While obtaining food is a challenge for tens of millions of Americans, accessing nutritious food has proven to be even more difficult. Low-income levels have historically been linked to higher rates of obesity.  A recent study revealed obesity rates increased by 10 percent for all U.S. children 10 to 17 years old between 2003 and 2007, but by 23 percent during the same time period for low-income children. With the recently launched pilot program, Food For Families hopes to address hunger and obesity simultaneously by making fresh produce available for those who may not always have access to it.

“During the school year, many families rely upon free or reduced cost school lunch programs to provide their children with well-rounded meals,” said Teel-Wolter. “Over the summer break, these children can become vulnerable to food insecurity. Our Food For Families Fresh donation drive will help bolster the supply of healthy food at our local food banks to meet the increased need.”

Established in 1974, the Elk Grove Food Bank Services is a critical component to the welfare of the Elk Grove community, providing food, clothing and resources to our neighbors in need.  The Food Bank receives funding from individual donors, foundations, businesses, churches and local/federal governments. The summer break has severely affected the number of clients aided by EG Food Bank:  in the month of May 2014, 3,512 individuals used the services of the Food Bank – 444 more individuals than the previous months; a 14.5 percent increase.

Making a donation is easy, and can be done from the comfort of your own home, from your cell phone or during your next trip to your local Raley’s Family of Fine Foods Stores (Raley’s, Bel-Air or NobHill). See below for details:

Stamp Out Hunger 2013

On the second Saturday of May each year the letter carriers in Elk Grove will be conducting a food drive to assist the less fortunate in our city. The U.S. Postal Food Drive is the country’s largest one day-collection. “We are truly grateful for the response to the drive in past years and the dedication of our local letter carriers,” said Executive Director, Marie Jachino.

The Elk Grove Food Bank Services is always in need of a helping hand, but Saturday, May 11, we will get the help of several hands. All over Elk Grove letter carriers will deliver mail and pick up canned goods and non-perishable food.

Remember the Postal Carrier food drive is Saturday, May 11, the day before another important day, Mothers Day!

Merryhill School Makes Donation

Merryhill School students are learning about Giving Without Walls and how they can give back to the community.  The students wanted to give food to those in need.  The classrooms collected food items for two weeks to donate to the local Elk Grove Food Bank.  It was a great experience, especially seeing the truck and helping give the canned food to the driver.

We at Elk Grove Food Bank appreciate these lessons taught to our youngest citizens.  Our clients will benefit greatly from the kindness of these children.

Elk Grove Stamps Out Hunger

Our Postal Carriers must have had to creatively pack the donated food and the mail in their trucks.  They transported the mail out and the food back to us, so much food!  We so appreciate their effort.  Some of your customers and neighbors will directly benefit from your effort.  Thank you!

The results have not been officially weighed, but by the "calibrated eye" of our volunteers, we estimate we received three times more food this year!

Thank you US Postal Service and all others in our community that participated in this incredible effort!

Boy Scout Food Drive

Our volunteers help unload the food the Scouts collected in their food drive.

Keith McConnell, Deana McConnell and Ken Oneto brought the food over to the Food Bank.

The Falcon Patrol of Boy Scout Troop 118 organized this very successful food drive.  They set out  bags at 1,400 houses in Elk Grove, and then collected the food on April 28th.  These kind-hearted young men collected a total of 1,505 pounds of food.  The bags were donated by Raley's.

Thank you to Boy Scout Troop 118 for collecting the food.   The growing number of neighbors who need help will benefit from your hard work.

20th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Postal Food Drive

During this recession, providing food can be extremely difficult, especially among seniors and children.  According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 49 million Americans were facing hunger in 2011.

On Saturday, May 12, the Elk Grove Food Bank Services will participate in the largest food drive in the nation, the 20th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Postal Food Drive.  Over 10,000 communities all over the U. S. will join forces to help put an end to hunger, and you can participate too. Every food donation helps in the fight against hunger no matter how small or large.

Simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, or fruit, pasta, tuna or cereal next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 12.

Elk Grove area letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail and take the distribution to the Elk Grove Food Bank.

Last year the Food Bank distributed almost 3 million pounds of food to local individuals and families living right here in our local community.

Texas Roadhouse Donation - the photos

Remember our previous posting about the beautiful coats that the staff of Texas Roadhouse collected? Well, through the cellphone of a staffer, some cellphone magic by her technically gifted family, and some creative emailing, we finally managed to get the photos here.

Three bags full of coats!

A brand-new coat to keep a client warm.

Don't forget about the food drive Texas Roadhouse in Elk Grove is having in January. I can taste the Baby Blossoms, and their ribs, and their rolls........

Country Sewing Center's On-going Support

Bill from Country Sewing Center popped by the office today to deliver some of the food donated at his shop for their annual food drive benefiting EGFBS. Bill explained that each Holiday season for the past few years they have put out a collection barrel to encourage their clients to help out those who are less fortunate in our community.

It was so nice to see one of our local business people taking the time to encourage his clientele to be more community-minded, during the busy Holiday season.

P. S. Bill used a box from one of his sewing machines to bring in the food donated at his shop. I wish I had my camera with today.

Texas Roadhouse Food Drive

Just had a visit from an employee from Texas Roadhouse. She brought in three bags full of coats. She told us about the in-house competition they held to gather these beautiful, warm garments.

That's not all! She handed me a flyer explaining the benefits to participating in their food drive this January. Wow! What a good deal and you help out your neighbors in need in the process.

Volunteers Can, Too!

Our school-age children are busy collecting food for the Kids Can food drive program. KCRA sponsors this food drive which provides EGFBS with the majority of the food we distribute.

We are in need of volunteers to help pick up and/or load boxes from various schools and deliver them to our Dino Drive facility. If you have a truck or a van and would like to help us out; or if you don't have a large vehicle, you can still volunteer and help with the loading.

Scheduled pick up dates are:

November 14 - 18, 2011
and
November 28 - November 30, 2011

9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Barbara Berens at egkidscan@yahoo.com or at 685-5105. Thank you!

Elk Grove Western Festival

Howdy Partners !

The Elk Grove Western Festival will be held on the 30th of April and the 1st of May. Once again, the Festival Board of Directors has granted EGFBS a "Community Area" booth to get the word out as to who we are and what we do.

In conjunction with that, we have been given permission to hold a food drive. Johnson Amusements have announced that they will give one ride ticket for every can of food brought to the Food Bank Booth.

See you at the Twister!

Kids Can!

One of our volunteers (see previous Un-sung Heroes post) just unloaded a truckload of canned food collected by Elk Grove High School for the Kids Can! food drive. He estimates he transported a total of 15,058 cans of food today.

Another volunteer transported canned food from Elk Grove Charter School .

It is through the work of dedicated volunteers like these, EGFBS can operate as your local food bank.

Thank you, Kids Can! donors, and thank you to our faithful volunteers.

Un-sung Heroes

There are ones that show up at EG Food Bank Services to work and to serve those who are in need. These volunteers are diligent in their effort and quietly work behind the scenes without recognition.

One of these volunteers transported all of the food collected at St. Francis High School (see previous post). It was a lot of food. It required the use of a big truck.

When asked if he wanted some type of recognition for the work he does for EGFBS, perhaps the name of his company in this blog. He smiled and said, “That is not why we do it.”

Thank you.
